March Madness Bracket Contest: UCLA 7 to 2 odds Favorite

by Thomas Jensen on Monday, March 17th, 2008

As bettors look to for information about their March Madness Bracket Contest, they can thank back to back Final Four runs, in addition to a team as talented as any, the UCLA Bruins are Sportsbook.com’s 7-2 favorite to cut down the nets in San Antonio on April 6th.  The Bruins’ Achilles heal the previous two seasons was their mediocre inside game.  With the addition of freshman sensation Kevin Love, UCLA seems primed to play on the first Monday of April.  Love and his season averaging double-double (17.1 & 10.6) compliments the trio of outstanding perimeter players (Darren Collison, Josh Shipp and Russell Westbrook) Coach Howland has at his disposal.

Despite UCLA’s impressive roster and resume, it is a bit surprising that the top ranked UNC Tar Heels aren’t the favorite.  However they are right behind UCLA, coming in at 9-4  at Sportsbook.com.  After sweeping the regular season and Conference Championships, UNC is happy to have a healthy Ty Lawson back to the lineup to join Wooden Award favorite Tyler Hansbrough and scoring guard Wayne Ellington in what is possibly the most talented team in all of college hoops.

The team that has the most generous odds looks to be the Tennessee Volunteers at a potentially profitable 20-1. Although they played in a very weak SEC, the Vols are currently ranked #4 in the land with a 29-4 record and proved they can compete with the nation’s best when they went on the road to defeat a then undefeated #1 ranked Memphis squad. Led by the trio of Chris Lofton, JaJuan Smith and Tyler smith; Coach Pearl’s team can score with anyone, averaging 83 points per game this season.  Considering many experts believe the Vols should have been a top seed, it is surprising that currently eight teams are favored to win it all ahead of Tennessee.
