2010 March Madness Bracket Predictions: Since a one seed has never lost to a 16 seed, it makes sense, even though they cannot say it, for the top teams to take a peak at the eight and nine matchup in their bracket. One team Bill Self will have on his radar is UNLV, which squares off against Northern Iowa in the first round. Jim Boeheim is, no doubt, doing a little eyeballing himself, thinking about a possible meeting with Florida State on Sunday. Both the Rebels and Seminoles are favored, albeit slightly, to advance to the round of 32 in online bookmaker SBGglobal.com's 2010 March Madness Bracket Predictions.
No one will mistake Florida State for an offensive juggernaut anytime soon; however, the Seminoles do
know how to play defense, which, as the old saying goes, is what wins championships. Leonard Hamilton's troops ranked 19th in the nation in points per game allowed at 60.2 and they held teams to a collective 37.4 field goal percentage (the best in the country).
Should they beat a tough Gonzaga squad, the Seminoles could present some matchup issues for Syracuse. They have frontcourt players who can score and rebound in Solomon Alabi, Chris Singleton, and Ryan Reid and they have four capable guards, led by Brian Hoff, that can control the flow of a game both on offense and defense. All of the Orange's losses came against similarly contstructed squads.
While UNLV is not the running Rebels of old, it can still play a pretty mean game of basketball as its 25-8 record would suggest. Lon Kruger's team has traded in the run and gun offensive approach for a suffocating defensive mindset. UNLV is also deep and able to keep bodies fresh, which is critical given the nature of its defensive style.
The Rebels are battle tested too, having played BYU and San Diego State three times each, New Mexico twice, and Kansas State and Louisville. Granted, none of those teams are the Jayhawks, but at least Kruger's bunch will not feel too out of their league should they make it past Northern Iowa to face Bill Self's top ranked unit.
