The Rams earned their way to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Colonial Athletic Association tournament last Friday night. VCU overcame the Patriots of George Mason 71-50 in the championship game. The win was the Rams 24th of the year and it capped off a season which saw them go 14-4 in route to a first place finish in the Colonial Atlantic conference.
Virginia Commonwealth, which is currently listed at +4000 moneyline odds to win the East Region, is 4-2 in neutral site games this year. The Rams, who have won five games in a row entering Thursday's meeting with UCLA, are led by senior guard Eric Maynor. Maynor is averaging 22.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game.
UCLA had their eyes on another Pac-10 title, but things did not go according to plan for Ben Howland's squad. The Bruins, who have won five of their last six games, finished second to the Washington Huskies in the conference standings inspite of a 13-5 record in league action. They concluded the year with a 25-8 overall record after being dismissed 65-55 in the conference tournament semifinals by USC.
UCLA, which is 3-2 in neutral site games this year, is listed at +600 moneyline odds to emerge as the Final Four representative from the East Region. Point guard Darren Collison is the unquestioned leader of the Bruins; the senior is averaging 14.9 points and 4.9 assists per game this season.
