Louisville will look to continue its stellar run tomorrow night, but it will have to go through another hot team, the top seed Michigan State Spartans, in order to so. The two West Region teams are scheduled to take the court at the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona at 7:47pm ET; the game will be broadcast live on TBS. NCAA Tournament 2012 Sweet 16 Picks have Tom Izzo’s Spartans listed as a -5 against the spread favorite in the regional semi-final contest. Tomorrow’s game total is set at 125 points.
Louisville, the West Region’s four seed, was a bit of an afterthought going into the Big East Tournament two weeks ago after it closed out the regular season with back-to-back losses; however, the Cardinals reeled off four straight wins against Seton Hall, Marquette, Notre Dame, and Cincinnati to capture the league’s post-season crown.
The Cardinals run continued last week as they downed Davidson 69-62 in their NCAA Tournament opener and New Mexico 59-56 in a third round battle at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon.
Per usual, Louisville’s defense played a major role in both wins as they held the Wildcats and Lobos to 35 and 39.7 percent field goal shooting respectively. Peyton Siva led the Cardinals on offense against Davidson, scoring 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, but reserve guard Russ Smith took the reins against New Mexico, totaling 17 points in 23 minutes of play.
Michigan State, which also won its conference tournament, advanced to the Sweet 16 after by knocking off LIU-Brooklyn 89-67 and Saint Louis 65-61. Despite the close score in the second game, the Spartans shot 54.3 percent from the field while limiting the Billikins to an 18-for-51 shooting effort. Four Michigan State players scored in double figures, but Draymond Green and Keith Appling did most of the heavy lifting as they combined for 35 of the team’s 65 points. Green also finished the game with 13 rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
While Louisville is playing well right now, the nod has to go to the Spartans in this game. Tom Izzo has proven to be an NCAA Tournament master and Michigan State has been particularly strong in the Sweet 16 under his watch, posting a 7-2 record in nine regional semi-finals appearances.
