Cornell proved in the first two rounds of play that the NCAA Tournament committee made an error in judgement by seeding
the Big Red 12th in the East Region. Steve Donahue's squad came into the tournament having won 17 of its last 18 games by an average of 16 points per game. Obviously, despite opinions on the difficulty of an Ivy League schedule, Cornell deserved a higher seed.
Any thoughts that Cornell might be a doormat were dispelled when the Big Red ousted five seed Temple and four seed Wisconsin last weekend. Donahue's troops shot a ridiculous 58.5-percent from the field and 46-percent from beyond the arc in beating the Owls and Badgers.
Many are now praising Cornell's efforts due to its 12th seed, but the team has never seen itself as a long-shot, knowing full well the kind of basketball they could play.
"We don't consider ourselves a Cinderella team," forward Jon Jaques said. "We're one of the best teams in the country."
If anyone doubts that fact right now, those misgivings will be vanquished with a Big Red win over Kentucky tomorrow evening.
