Syracuse allayed all pre-Tournament fears last week with two dominating performances, effectively making Vermont and 
Gonzaga West Region fodder while moving on to the Sweet Sixteen. The Orange were especially impressive in their second round game against the Bulldogs, pounding Mark Few's bunch by a score of 87-65 to improve to 30-4 on the year. Syracuse shot 54.7 percent from the field and hit 12 of their 25 shots from beyond the arc in eliminating Gonzaga.
Swingman Wesley Johnson turned in an outstanding performance against the Zags, scoring 31 points on 11-of-16 shooting while also reeling in 14 boards. Johnson scored 49 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the first weekend of Tournament action.
Butler advanced to the Regional Semifinals by dispatching UTEP 77-59 and Murray State 54-52. The Bulldogs, which are also 30-4 on the year, did not play well at all against the Racers, getting outrebounded 38 to 20 and outshot 43 percent to 36 percent. However, they did force Murray State into 16 turnovers and went to the charity stripe seven more times than the Racers, which proved to be the difference in the game. Ronald Nored led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring 15 points and dishing out six assists in the close win.
Butler, despite not being a household name, is no stranger to tough competition. The Bulldogs, which have won 22 games in a row, defeated fellow Sweet Sixteen teams Ohio State and Xavier earlier in the season.
