Purdue was suppose to fall apart once Tournament play began, going on without forward Robbie Hummel was an impossible
task some said, but the Boilermakers ignored public and private perception. Matt Painter's squad beat Siena 72-64 in the first round of play and got past a tough Texas A&M bunch 63-61 in overtime of their second round game.
Center JaJuan Johnson stepped it up in the first game, scoring 23 points and grabbing 15 boards while guards Chris Kramer and E'Twaun Moore did the heavy lifting against the Aggies. Kramer, who hit a game winning layup against A&M, had 17 points and Moore added 15.
Duke won its sixth game in a row and improved to 31-5 last weekend, drilling the Cal Golden Bears 68-53 in Jacksonville. The Blue Devils won handily despite a seven point, 1-of-11 shooting effort from leading scorer Jon Scheyer as guard Nolan Smith poured in 20 points and center Brian Zoubek added 14 (13 rebounds). Forward Kyle Singler also had a nice outing, hitting 6-of-12 for 17 points.
Duke will be looking to overcome their recent Sweet Sixteen woes when they meet Purdue tonight. The Blue Devils are 1-5 in their last six regional semifinal appearances, beating only Illinois (2004) in that span.
This evening's contest should be a tight defensive struggle as both teams specialize in disrupting offenses. Purdue has allowed an average of 62.5 points per game in the Tournament (61 on the year) while the Blue Devils have held their first two NCAA opponents to an average of 48.5 per game.
