2012 Final Four Odds

by Matt Foust on Friday, March 30th, 2012

ohio state thomasThe 2011-12 college basketball has almost reached a conclusion, but fortunately for hoops fan one magnificent weekend still awaits as Kansas, Ohio State, Louisville, and Kentucky battle for the right to be called National Champions. Final Four action is scheduled to get underway Saturday, March 31st in New Orleans and it will conclude on Monday night with the National Championship game. The latest NCAA Point Spreads are holding fast to earlier predictions, but doing so with even greater fervor as Kentucky, which opened NCAA Tournament play as a 12 to 5 favorite to win it all, is listed at -150 odds to be the last team standing on Monday at the Merceds-Benz Superdome.

Is there an upset on the horizon?

Kentucky is the favorite to win it all, and for good reason. The Wildcats have been the best team all season long and they’ve showed no signs of slowing down or faltering in their run to New Orleans. However, there are no perfect teams and Kentucky is certainly capable of being beat by any of the other three teams remaining in the tournament. Consequently, there is value in each of those squads, particularly Ohio State and Kansas, which are listed at +300 and +500 moneyline odds to win the National Championship, respectively.

Louisville represents a threat as well, and at +900 odds is not a bad play, but unlike last year’s Connecticut team, the Cardinals would seemingly lack the overall offensive firepower to beat the Wildcats or Kansas/Ohio State within a three day period. Both the Jayhawks and Buckeyes have multiple offensive weapons and, like Louisville, they play well at the defensive end of the floor.

Kentucky is where it’s at, but a little something on any of the other teams may be worth the investment. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as the saying goes.
