The Bulldogs continued their impressive Tournament march on Saturday, scoring a 52-50 win against the Michigan State
Spartans. The victory was the 25th in a row for Butler, which came into the NCAA's as the five seed in the West Region. The Bulldogs shot horribly in the win, hitting just 30.6 percent from the field and 5-of-21 from three point range; however, the team did get a number of timely baskets from Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack as the two combined for 33 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs defense also showed up big again, grabbing 12 steals while forcing 16 Michigan State turnovers. The Spartans, which managed just 42 shots against Butler, also hurt themselves with an abysmal 10-of-18 performance from the free throw line.
Brad Stevens' squad has dispatched an impressive list of teams in order to get a crack at Duke this evening. UTEP, Murray State, Syracuse, Kansas State, and Michigan State combined to win 144 games this season (28.8 avg), but they averaged a pathetic 55.2 points per game against the Bulldogs in the Tournament.
The Blue Devils won their ninth straight game on Saturday with a 78-57 win over West Virginia. Duke burned up the nets against the Mountaineer, something no other team had done in the Tournament, hitting 53 percent of its field goals and 52 percent from beyond the arc. Coach K's big three, Kyle Singler, Jon Scheyer, Nolan Smith, proved too much for Bob Huggins' troops as they combined for 63 of the Blue Devils 78 points.
Duke, which won the ACC Tournament prior to the NCAA's, beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, California, Purdue, Baylor, and West Virginia by an average of 17 points per game in order to reach tonight's NCAA Final. Only Baylor stayed within single digits of the Blue Devils, losing 71-78 in the Regional Final.
Game Note: Butler starting forward Matt Howard is listed as a game time decision for tonight's game after suffering a mild concussion in Saturday's win over Michigan State.
