College Hoops Picks: UConn vs Buffalo

by Alexander Banks on Thursday, November 8th, 2007

The 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer continues Thursday night with two on-campus games, UConn vs. Buffalo at Storrs, Conn., and Oklahoma hosting San Francisco University in Norman. The winners of each on-campus sub-regional will move on to New York next week for the advanced rounds. Memphis University and Gardner-Web University have both already advanced.

Oddsmakers at online sports wagering giant Sportsbook.com have installed UConn a 17 ½ chalk favorite over Buffalo with a 141 total. Oklahoma is laying 16 points to the USF Dons with a 132 game total.

In the opening round on Wednesday, UConn went into its game with Morgan State a 28-point favorite and narrowly escaped with a 69-65 SU win. The game was the season opener for both teams.

One other game, Denver University vs. East Central Oklahoma State will be played earlier at Lloyd Noble Arena on the OU campus with the winner taking on the winner of the USF/OU game tomorrow. The game between Denver and East Central is not available for online betting.

Jerome Dyson scored 20 points and Jeff Adrien had a double-double as UConn held off a determined Morgan State squad last night.

The Huskies seemed to wrestle control of a tight game by opening up a 44-28 lead with 16:50 remaining on a three-pointer by Dyson. But the Bears put on a long-range shooting display that brought them on the brink of the upset win. Over a span of 6:20, Morgan State made five consecutive three-pointers, four by Reggie Holmes, the last of which tied the score at 52 with 6:41 to play.

Curtis Kelly, who played the best game of his Husky career, made two free throws to give the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish. Marquise Kately hit another three later to bring Morgan State within one, at 58-57, but Dyson and Doug Wiggins answered with back-to-back three-pointers and Morgan State got no closer than four points the rest of the way.
