Odds to win NCAA Tournament 2012: The madness is a long way off yet, but with the start of the college basketball season right around the corner, it is never too early to speculate on a potential national champion. After all, the book makers have already compiled their list and if you feel strong about a certain school its odds to win NCAA Tournament 2012 may never be better than right now. Unless you are a North Carolina or Kentucky backer that is. The Tar Heels are the current favorite to win it all at 7 to 2 odds; the Wildcats are a close second, presently drawing 9 to 2 odds.
North Carolina Tar Heels (7/2): The excitement in Chapel Hill for the upcoming basketball season is both palpable and
understandable considering what Head Coach Roy Williams has in the cupboard. Last year's team, which compiled a 26-7 record before entering the NCAA Tournament, made it all the way to the East Region Final where it lost to Kentucky 76-69. The entire starting lineup from that squad, including leading rebounder John Henson and top scorer Harrison Barnes, returned for another season of amatuer hoops. Henson and Barnes are both on the Naismith Trohy preseason watch list; they are joined by teammates Kendall Marshall, the team's leading assister from last season, and forward Tyler Zeller (15.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg). Williams also welcomes 6' 9" freshman forward James McAdoo, a McDonald's All-American, to the Tar Heel fold.
Kentucky Wildcats (9/2): John Calipari lost his leading scorer from last year's squad in Brandon Knight, but Terrence Jones (F), Doron Lamb (G), and Darius Miller (G) all returned to Lexington. Coach Cal, who guided the Wildcats to an SEC title and Final Four appearance (lost to UConn 55-56 in national semifinal) last year, also raked in, per usual, one of the nation's top recruiting classes. Forwards Anthony Davis and Michael Gilchrist and guard Marquis Teague all signed with the Wildcats. So, while the departure of Knight hurts, the sting from his loss will be short lived.
