Bobby Knight Nears All-Time Win MarkWhether you like Bobby Knight or not, the Texas Tech coach who has become a lightening rod at times during his career by media critics, officials, and fans, his name is synonymous with greatness and winning on the basketball court. But one thing is for certain, Knight is only two wins away from becoming the all time most winning coach in college basketball history.

Bob Knight moved two wins behind all-time leader Dean Smith on the Division I career coaching list when Texas Tech beat Centenary 98-64 on Saturday. Knight's 877th victory broke his tie for second place with Kentucky's Adolph Rupp and left him behind only the former North Carolina coach. If the Red Raiders beat Arkansas in Little Rock on Saturday (Dec. 17), Knight could tie Smith at home on Dec. 23, against Bucknell.

Smith, who retired in 1997, won 879 games in 36 years with the Tar Heels. The 66-year-old Knight, who is in his 41st season, got the bulk of his wins (662) at Indiana. Knight tied Rupp on Wednesday when the Red Raiders won at Louisiana Tech.

Knight has been downplaying catching Smith all season and when asked about tying Rupp following the Texas Tech win, he was equally nonchalant. "It doesn't mean a thing to me," Knight said. "I played against Rupp's teams. The thing that I remember most about Rupp's team and it pleases me far more than this is one time I scored seven points against the ornery old son of a (gun) and we beat them."

Knight’s son Pat Knight, designated to become the head coach at Texas Tech when his father retires, addressed the media in his fathers absence following the Red Raiders victory over Centenary. “He went hunting,” said the younger Knight. "I know it's disappointing for you guys. It's like expecting Brad Pitt and getting Martin Short. I've been trying to get him to go hunting because I told him the other day, 'I really like you a lot better when you come back from hunting. You're a little more relaxed,'" Pat Knight said. The younger Knight did not comment on his fathers accomplishments while addressing the media.
