kentucky coach calipariNo. 1 Kentucky will take aim at its 13th straight win later today when it battles conference rival LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The two squads are scheduled to begin play at 4:00pm ET at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center; the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. NCAA Basketball Point Spreads have the Wildcats listed as a -10 against the spread road favorite and the Over/Under set at 132 points.

Kentucky (20-1 overall, 6-0 SEC) survived its first foray as the nation’s new No. 1 team with a 57-44 road victory against the struggling Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday night. The performance on the offensive end of the floor was anything but noteworthy, save that of reserve guard Darius Miller (19 points on 7-of-8 shooting), as the Wildcats shot just 43.8 percent from the field and had only two players score in double figures. However, John Calipari’s troops more than made up for the poor offense with a splendid defensive showing.

Kentucky limited Georgia to 34.5 percent field goal shooting while also recording 10 blocks and 31 defensive rebounds. All of those things led to the Wildcats keeping an opponent under the 50 point mark for the second time this season and the first time in SEC play.

LSU, while not an offensive powerhouse, might pose more problems for Kentucky this afternoon. The Tigers, which are 12-8 overall, are not hot, having lost four of their last five games (all in conference), but they have been competitive at home.

LSU blasted Mississippi 81-55 on January 7th and it slipped past Auburn 65-58 in overtime at the Maravich Assembly Center on the 17th. Those two wins served as the Tigers lone conference victories and they improved the team’s home record to 7-2 for the season.

On a not so positive note for LSU are the results of its last two meetings with the Wildcats. Kentucky smoked the Tigers 82-44 last January and it recorded a similar blowout triumph its last trip to Baton Rouge (February of 2010) with an 81-55 win.

Perhaps the Tigers are better equipped to stay within striking distance of with the Wildcats this time around, though. LSU beat a ranked Marquette team at home earlier this season and it also hung tough in a January 2nd loss to No. 19 Virgina (57-52).
