LSU Wraps Up Road Swing at Washington

by Thomas Jensen on Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

The No. 12 LSU Tigers basketball team completes its current west-coast swing tonight (Dec. 20) when they invade Bank of America Arena in Seattle to play the No. 18 University of Washington Huskies in a game televised by FSN-Northwest with tip-off at 10 p.m. EST.

The Huskies are averaging 88.9 points per game, including 100-point outbursts against Nicholls State (102) and Portland State (105). Washington ranked among the nation's top-six scoring teams in each of the last three seasons, finishing fourth with 82.0 points per game last season after ranking No. 2 in 2005 (86.5 ppg) and No. 6 in 2004 (82.0 ppg).

The Huskies will start three freshmen and two sophomores, the second team the Tigers have faced this year without an upperclassman in the starting lineup. And the young Washington players aren’t just taking up minutes. The top two scorers are freshmen: Quincy Pondexter with 16 points a game and Spencer Hawes at 13.8. Sophomores Justin Dentmon and Jon Brockman rank third and fourth with 12.9 and 11.6 points a game, respectively.

LSU is coming off a sometimes shaky 60-53 win over Oregon State in Corvallis on Sunday. The Tigers were able to do enough to win the game, holding off an Oregon State team that hit 11-of-21 threes, eight in the second half. Glen Davis had his fourth consecutive double-double and it marked his fourth consecutive game scoring over 20 points. He was the first to score over 20 in four consecutive games since Jaime Lloreda scored 20-plus in the final game of the 2003 season and the first four games of the 2004 season.

The game between LSU and Washington is labeled a PICK according to most offshore and Las Vegas sports books with a total of 149. A majority of the betting public (63%) like the Huskies on home court as a SU pick. Washington covered -15 ATS in its previous home game defeating Portland State 105-73 on Dec 16. The Huskies had failed to cover ATS in their previous four games including a 20-point loss at Gonzaga failing to cover ATS +7 ½. Washington has failed to cover ATS six of eight board games this season.

The Tigers have not provided any better value for bettors losing four of six ATS including all three road games, -17 at Tulane, -2 at Texas and -11 ½ at Oregon State.
