March Madness Picks: North Carolina vs Washington StateWashington State and North Carolina meet tonight in the NCAA Tournament East regional semi-finals in what could be one of the more interesting games of the entire tournament. The Cougars are a team that survives on defense while North Carolina wants to move the ball up and down the court. Both teams are very good at what they do so this match-up will be a test of wills. The Tar Heels made it to the Eastern semi-finals by waltzing through Mount St. Mary’s 113-74 and No. 9 Arkansas in the second round 107-77. In both games, the Tar Heels easily covered the betting line both times; as at -26 vs. Mount St. Mary’s and -10 vs. Arkansas. Washington State has a very tough, disciplined defense that is more than capable of playing 35 seconds of defense in a halfcourt setting and is not prone to breakdowns. Teams have managed to score 70 or more points against Washington State just six times this season; the Cougars are 3-3 in those games and 0-1 when allowing 80 or more points (UCLA scored 81 in the Cougars' first loss this season). However, the team is 12-0 when allowing 50 points or less and 7-0 when it's 60 or fewer points. Their two NCAA opponents have averaged 40.5 points per game. The Cougars have allowed a team to shoot 50% or higher from the floor just six times this season and are 3-3 in those games. They are a 9-4 when allowing 40-49% shooting and 14-0 when holding opponents to 40 percent or less. Two of those 14 wins have come in the last two games; their last two opponents have shot 29-of-105 from the field (27.6%).
