ACC hoops action begins tonight (Dec. 10) at the Silvio O Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill as the Maryland Terrapins visits No. 23 Boston College in the conference opener for both schools with tip-off at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by FSN.
The Terps are 10-7 in league openers under head coach Gary Williams and have won each of their last two, including a 73-71 win over sixth-ranked Boston College in College Park last year. The Terps are 4-2 all-time against Boston College, dating back to their first meeting in 1958. Maryland has never faced the Eagles in Chestnut Hill.
At 9-1 the Terrapins are off to their best start through 10 games since the 1998-99 campaign when Maryland jumped out to a 10-0 start. The Terps finished that year with 28-6 record and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
Maryland has displayed a balanced offensive attack through ten games this season. The Terps are averaging 80.7 points per game this season and have five players averaging double figures. Strawberry leads the team with 15.2 points per game. Mike Jones is averaging 12.7 points per game, while Ekene Ibekwe has tallied 11.9 points per game. Junior James Gist is averaging 10.9 points. Freshman Grevivis Vasques is averaging 10.5 points per game off the bench. Ibekwe, Jones and Strawberry have each been the team's leading scorer at least three times this season.
In the Eagles last game Jared Dudley scored 20 points and Sean Williams 16 to lead Boston College to its fourth straight win, spoiling the return of Fairfield head coach Ed Cooley with a 75-52 victory over the Stags on Wednesday night. Sean Marshall scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half for the Eagles.
Boston College opened as the favorite with a -1 ½ point chalk which has since moved a half-point to -2 at most offshore sports-books. The betting public seems to like BC on home court with 81% throwing their money on the Eagles. The total is set at 146.
