The eighth ranked Kansas Jayhawks will look to rebound from their first conference loss of the season tonight when they welcome the Oklahoma Sooners to Lawrence. This evening’s Big 12 battle is scheduled to tip off at 9:00pm ET at the Phog Allen Fieldhouse; it will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Kansas rolled into Ames’ Hilton Coliseum on Saturday undefeated in Big 12 play and riding a 10 game win streak, but none of that kept Bill Self’s squad from succumbing to a scrappy Iowa State team 64-72. The Jayhawks shot 48 percent from the floor and saw each starter score in double figures, but the Cyclones would not be denied.
Iowa State dominated the boards 34 to 19, despite Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withy combining for 13 rebounds, and they earned 34 trips to the charity stripe where they scored 25 of their 72 points.
Kansas, now 17-4 overall and 7-1 in league action, remains atop the conference standings, but they can ill afford a slip up tonight with a trip to second place Missouri coming up this weekend. Jayhawks fans probably have little to fear, though, despite the Sooners playing better than many expected.
Oklahoma did bring its Big 12 record to 3-5 over the weekend with an upset of then No. 24 Kansas State in Manhattan, but they lost back-to-back conference games prior to that. The Sooners recent history against Kansas, to no one’s surprise, is a painful. The Jayhawks have won eight in a row and nine of their last 10 against OU and their last five wins over the Sooners at Allen Fieldhouse were by an average of 16.4 points per game.
Oklahoma, which fell 61-72 to Kansas in Norman on January 7th, gets rolled in this one as the Jayhawks get a nice tune up before dealing with the No. 4 Tigers on Saturday night.
