Tigers to Lock Horns with Texas

by Thomas Jensen on Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Tigers to Lock Horns with TexasThe Texas Longhorns (5-2) host the No. 9 LSU Tigers (5-1) tonight (Dec. 10) in Houston at the Toyota Center with tip-off at 8:00 p.m. (EST) and will be televised by ESPN.

Sunday's contest also is a rematch of last year's NCAA "Elite Eight" game in Atlanta, although to call it a true rematch would be inaccurate. LSU won that game (70-60) in overtime and advanced to the Final Four. Only one Texas player (A.J. Abrams) on the current Texas roster saw game action in that contest. Abrams tallied six points in 19 minutes off the bench.

The Longhorns might be a little rusty with over a week off since their last game, a 77-87 loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs. In that game freshman Kevin Durant tied his career high in scoring with 29 points and set a career high in free throws making 10-of-10. The 29 points by Durant tied for the fourth-most points in a single game by a Texas Freshman.

The Tigers knocked off No. 6 Texas A&M 64-52 in their last time out on Tuesday (Dec. 5). Glen Davis is entering the game off two consecutive double-doubles with 20 points and 13 rebounds at Tulane on Dec. 2 and 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win versus A&M on Tuesday. He is second in the SEC in both scoring and rebounding. The Tiger lineup may return to the starting five of the first five games with Davis, Tasmin Mitchell, Darnell Lazare, Garrett Temple and Dameon Mason.

Texas is very young, but has some outstanding talent that the Tigers will have to stop, led by Durant who is averaging 23.3 points and 9.4 rebounds a game. Former New Orleans prep star D. J. Augustin is averaging 9.3 points and 6.6 assists as the Longhorns are expected to start four freshmen and a sophomore against LSU.
