Nebraska returned 11 starters from last year's 5-7 squad, a record that earned former Head Coach Bill Callahan his dismissal. The Cornhuskers brought in Bo Pelini, a former defensive coordinator and interim head coach in 2003, to get the program turned around. The team finished 8-4 under his guidance and closed out the year by winning five of their last six games. Nebraska, 5-3 in conference play, finished second in the Big 12 North standings.

The Cornhuskers, who tallied 36.2 points per game this season, produced an average 458.3 yards per game. Senior quarterback Joe Ganz passed for 3332 yards and 23 touchdowns; he also scored five rushing touchdowns.

Clemson began the year ranked in the top 10, but quickly fell out of favor after being rolled by Alabama in their first game. The Tigers inconsistent play, three losses in six games, resulted in Head Coach Tommy Bowden being shown the door halfway through his 10th season. Dabo Swinney was tabbed as interim head coach and the players responded to his tutelage by winning four of their last five games. The Tigers finished with a 7-5 overall record and a 4-4 conference mark, good enough for last place in the ACC's Atlantic division.

The Tigers limited opposing offenses to 294.8 yards per game, which resulted in a meager 16.6 points per game allowed average.

Gator Bowl Betting Trend: The Under is 8-2 in Clemson's last 10 games as a favorite with a spread between 0 to 3.5.
