If you listen to the television talking heads…you might get the idea the Kansas Jayhawks don’t have a crying chance to beat the Virginia Tech Hokies in tonight’s Orange Bowl at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. The same talking heads weren’t giving West Virginia much of a chance on Wednesday to beat Oklahoma either. As it turns out, West Virginia made mincemeat out of the vaunted Oklahoma defense shredding it for a 48-28 win.
Every year, I try to find a team I can call “my bread and butter.” A team I can count on to cover for me week in and week out. That team this year was the Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks went 11-1 SU and 10-1 against the spread. No other team in the BCS was as consistent as Kansas in both winning percentage and beating the spread.
From a betting perspective, Virginia Tech was not very good to start the year covering ATS 5-of-7 times while going 6-2 SU over the first eight games. The Hokies seemed to come together both SU and ATS winning and covering the final five games including the ACC championship game when they beat Boston College 30-16 SU and covered the 5-point betting line as the favorite.
Tonight’s game is a tough call, but in no way is it a slam-dunk win for Virginia Tech. The Hokie defense will be challenged in every way because Mark Mangino’s Jayhawks play at full-throttle all the time.
