In one of the most anticipated matchups in this crazy College Football BCS Bowl Picks the Ohio State Buckeyes take on the LSU Tigers in the BCS Championship Bowl Game with quite a bit to prove this time around. Last year Ohio State got embarrassed in the title game and are hoping for a better BCS picks performance this year. Ohio State comes into this game after winning their first 10 games this season, climbing to the top of the national rankings before losing a shocker to Illinois on November 10. After that loss the Buckeyes won and then had to wait for teams above them to lose in order to get into this final game. Ohio State is led by the top ranked defense in the league and Butkus Award winning linebacker James Laurinaitis, defensive end Vernon Gholston and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins. On the season the Ohio State defense gave up only 11 total touchdowns, gave up only 13 first downs per game, and held five opponents to under 20 yards rushing. Still it doesn’t seem go enough for the public as BodogLife.com has the Buckeyes listed as a +4 point underdog.
Just like the Buckeyes, the LSU Tigers had to claw their way back to the Top when they lost their second game of the year to the Arkansas Razorbacks on November 23rd. That loss dropped them down to 7th in the standings. They did come back to win the SEC Championship game that was enough to get them into this game tonight. To counter the #1 ranked Ohio State defense LSU comes in with their own high-powered offense that averaged 38.7 points per game and scored over 40 points seven times this season. The Tigers accomplished this using a two quarterback system with Matt Flynn, a pocket passer who threw for 17 touchdowns, and Ryan Perrilloux, who rushed for 203 yards. However, even with all of that scoring they are more of a run oriented team with a run to pass ratio of 59 to 41 on the season. The LSU defense got more notoriety than Ohio State but gave up a substantially more 30 touchdowns as well as giving up 441 yards of offense in their last three games.
Ohio State coach Jim Tresell has turned around the bowl performance of the Buckeyes as they are 4-1 both SU & ATS their L5 overall including winning their L3 bowl games as underdogs. LSU was a disappointing this season, going only 4-7 ATS but come in a stellar 11-1 ATS in non-conference play, including 2-0 SU & ATS in bowl games. As an added bonus for LSU, Ohio State is 3-9-1 all time versus the SEC, while LSU is 5-3-1 against the Big Ten.
