2010 College Football Picks: The Big 12 Conference, which barely survived the offseason, sent squads to the BCS National Championship Game, Cotton Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Alamo Bowl, Independence Bowl, Texas Bowl, and Insight Bowl last season. The teams that appeared in those games are, for the most, the same ones expected to challenge for the division and league titles this year. 2010 College Football Picks at BetUS.com have Texas, last year's conference champion, listed as a +200 moneyline favorite to win its second consecutive Big 12 Championship.
Big 12 South:
Texas Longhorns (+200): Mack Brown welcomes backs 12 starters from last year's 13-1 BCS team, but
not among the returnees is quarterback Colt McCoy. The longtime signal caller will be replaced by sophomore Garrett Gilbert, who filled in for McCoy in the National Championship loss to Alabama. Also gone is leading receiver Jordan Shipley. The defense returns seven starters but loses top tackler Roddrick Muckelroy (102 tackles) as well as safety Earl Thomas (eight interceptions) and linebacker Sergio Kindle (16.5 tackles for loss).
Oklahoma Sooners (+225): The Sooners bring back 13 starters and 47 lettermen from last year's disappointing 8-5 team. With the talent level as high as usual and Bob Stoops track record (only two non-double digit winning seasons since 2000), no one expects Oklahoma to falter again this year. The Sooners October 2nd meeting with the Longhorns could well decide the South winner.
Big 12 North:
Nebraska Cornhuskers (+240): Bo Pelini brings back 15 starters from the Huskers 10-4 2009 campaign and that has expectations high in Lincoln. If the offense, which averaged 25.1 points per game last season, can get more consistency out of quarterback Zac Lee, than those expectations may be realized. A Big 12 title is not an unreasonable thought, especially considering Nebraska's 12-13 loss as a +14 dog to Texas in last year's conference championship game. The Cornhuskers would love nothing more than a parting shot championship in their final Big 12 season.
Missouri Tigers (+650): Missouri won back-to-back North titles prior to last season and with 16 starters back from 2009's 8-5 team, it only seems logical that they will challenge for it in 2010. The Tigers did lose a couple of big contributors in wide receiver Danario Alexander and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, but quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who threw for 3593 yards and 24 touchdowns in his sophomore season, returns to lead Gary Pinkel's squad.
