2009 College Football Odds: The Iowa Hawkeyes came off a 6-6 2007 campaign to become a major force in the Big 10 last year, working their way to a 9-4 mark and a 31-10 Outback Bowl win over South Carolina. The Hawkeyes stellar season has produced quite a bit of buzz regarding the upcoming year of gridiron action. Iowa Hawkeyes 2009 College Football Odds at BetUS.com are expecting Kirk Ferentz to field another quality unit as the over 8 on the squad's season win total is being favored at -135 on the moneyline. Kirk Ferentz, who has produced a 70-53 record in his first 10 seasons at Iowa, should feel good about his team's chances to win the Big 10 this season. The Hawkeyes finished fourth in the conference a year ago with a 5-3 league record and they return 14 starters from that group (six offensive, eight defensive)., including junior quarterback Ricky Stanzi. Stanzi threw for 1956 yards as a sophomore while rushing for a respectable 174. He proved to be an effective alternative to the team's ground oriented attack by throwing 14 touchdowns to just nine interceptions. Stanzi may have to carry a little bit more of the load this season as Doak Walker winner Shonn Greene opted to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL Draft (taken in the third round - NYJ). Greene will be replaced by sophomore Jewel Hampton, who ran for 463 yards (5.1 yards per carry) last year as a true freshmen. The Hawkeyes had one of the best offensive lines in the country a season ago, and they should be nearly as formidable this year. The starting five are all upperclassmen, and as a group they have 99 career starts. Defensively Iowa was a powerhouse in 2008, limiting opponents to a meager 13 points per game. Their front seven helped hold teams to an average of just 3.1 yards per carry and as a unit they allowed only 291 yards per contest. The two starting defensive tackles from that corps are gone, but both ends return as well as all of last year's starting linebackers, including leading tackler, senior Pat Angerer. The conference schedule could be the biggest hiccup for the Hawkeyes this season. Iowa, which averaged 29.8 points per game in Big 10 play last year while giving up 16.3, will face Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Ohio State all on the road. Kirk Ferentz troops, despite their great play, produced a 2-3 away record against conference foes last year. Tha Hawkeyes kick things off with a September 5th battle against Northern Iowa; their first Big 10 tilt is in Happy Valley (Penn State) on September 26th.
