Michigan State Spartans 2009 College Football Odds – BCS Odds 2010

by Matt Foust on Sunday, July 12th, 2009

2009 College Football Odds: Michigan State Spartans Head Coach Mark Dantonio has the football program headed in the right direction as he enters his third season in East Lansing. Dantonio guided his troops to a third place finish in the Big 10 last year with an 8-4 record and they earned a spot in the Capital One Bowl as a result. The Spartans fell to Georgia 24-12 in that game, but with 15 starters returning, State fans are hoping they will have a chance at bowl redemption this season. Michigan State Spartans 2009 College Football Odds at SBGglobal.com are calling for the team to take a step back as the Spartans win total is set at 8 with the under drawing -160 on the moneyline.

Offensively Michigan State was adequate a season ago, producing a 25.1 point per game average and an average of 343 yards per game. The team relied heavily on running back Javon Ringer, who accounted 1637 yards on the ground and 22 touchdowns. The passing game, led by Brian Hoyer was medicore at best, allowing opponents to load up against the run in crucial spots. As evidence of such, the team averaged a dismal 3.3 yards per carry, in spite of Ringer going for 4.2 per carry.

Hoyer, who threw 9 touchdowns and 9 interceptions last year, is gone. He will likely be replaced by Keith Nichol, a transfer from Oklahoma, or Kirk Cousins. They two could possibly split time, but either way, it should be an upgarde over Hoyer.

Ringer is gone as well and his absence will be a blow to the squad; however, the offensive line should be improved, which might help alleviate the loss from the All-American's departure to the NFL.

The Spartan defense was servicable in 2008, but they proved that they were not capable of standing up to the other major powers in the Big 10. While Michigan State went 6-2 in conference play, they lost to Ohio State and Penn State by a combined score of 94-25. Dantonio's defense allowed an average of just 19 points per game in their other six conference outings.

Michigan State gave up an average of 142 yards per game last year on the ground (4.1 yards per carry). That should improve, as should the unit as a whole, with eight starters returning. The front seven has more depth, experience, and talent this season and will be anchored by first team all conference performer, linebacker Greg Jones (127 tackles, 14 tackles for loss in 2008).

The Spartans open the season September 5th in East Lansing with an out of conference tilt against the Montana State Bobcats. Their first conference battle will be September 26th at Wisconsin.
