Texas Tech Red Raiders 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: Texas Tech shocked everyone last season by letting longtime Head Coach Mike Leach go prior to the team's bowl game against Michigan State. Leach got into hot water over alledged mistreatment of wide receiver Adam James and was dismissed despite having guided the program to a 45-18 record since 2005. The always eccentric Leach will be replaced this year by former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. 2010 College Football Predictions at BetUS.com have the Red Raiders listed at +600 moneyline odds to win the Big 12 South in Tuberville's inaugural season.
Tommy Tuberville had an impressive run at Auburn, putting together an 85-40 record at the school, including an
undefeated 13-0 season in 2004, but he will have a difficult time matching Leach's record at Tech. Fortunately for Tuberville, he will inherit 14 starters and 47 lettermen from last year's 9-4 Alamo Bowl winning squad, giving him what should be a competitive squad in the Big 12 South.
Tuberville brought in Neal Brown to run the Red Raiders offense, which averaged 37 points and 471 yards per game last season. Brown will use the same pass early, pass often system that Leach employed and he will have all of last year's top performers at his disposal. Taylor Potts returns after throwing for 3440 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2009; he will battle senior Steven Sheffield, who threw for 1219 yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago, for the top spot.
Also back is leading rusher Baron Batch and top receivers Detron Lewis and Alexander Torres. Batch rushed for 884 yards and 14 touchdowns in a solid junior campaign while Lewis and Torres combined for 132 receptions, 1650 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns last year.
The Texas Tech defense will be directed James Willis, a former linebackers coach at Auburn under Tuberville and the linebackers coach for last year's National Champion, Alabama. Last season the Red Raiders held teams to 22.5 points and 352 yards per game under coordinator Ruffin McNeill, who served as interim head coach in Tech's 41-31 bowl victory. Six starters are back from that group, including top tacklers Brian Duncan and Cody Davis.
