2009 College Football Odds: The Minnesota Golden Gophers rebounded last year from a horrible 1-11 2007 to finish 7-6 and in sixth place in the Big 10. Expectations are high in the Minneapolis area as Tim Brewster, who is entering his third season as head coach of the Gophers, has 17 starters returning from last year's much improved squad. However, BetUS.com is still viewing Minnesota as a long shot to win the Big 10 as the Gophers are listed at +2500 on the moneyline in the bookmaker's Minnesota Gophers 2009 College Football Odds and Conference Championship Odds.
Tim Brewster took over a team that went 6-7 in 2006 and guided it to a dismal 1-11 2007 record after making adjustments on both sides of the ball. The fruits of his labor became evident last year when the club went 4-0 out of the chute before falling 21-34 at Ohio State in week 5.
Offensively the Gophers should be much more potent this season as they return their starting quarterback, top receiver, top running backs, and all but one starting offensive lineman from a season ago. Minnesota produced 323 yards and 23.2 points per game in 2007, and those numbers should go up with the returning experience.
Quarterback Adam Weber and receiver Eric Decker had great chemistry in Brewster's offense last year, Weber throwing for 2761 yards and 15 touchdowns while Decker caught 84 passes for 1074 yards and seven touchdowns. The tandem will, again, provide the Gophers with an ability to stretch defenses and produce big plays in the passing game.
The Golden Gophers defense gave up 36.7 points and a staggering 518 yards per contest in 2007. Last year's unit improved exponentially, dropping those numbers to 24.8 and 384 respectively. They return eight starters from that group this season, and should see even further progress, especially in the secondary where they have three seniors and a junior leading the way.
Despite what is Brewster's most talented group yet, the Gophers have an extremely difficult schedule. Their non-conference slate has two landmines in Air Force and California, and in conference action they get three of the Big 10's toughest teams (Ohio State, Penn State, and Iowa) on the road.
