Vanderbilt Commodores 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011:What timing that today's scheduled college football BCS odds preview was to feature the Vanderbilt Commodores. And today it's announced by the school that head football coach Bobby Johnson is retiring. This coming only 7 weeks before Vandy hosts Northwestern in Nashville on Sept 4. Stepping in to head the footbal team on an interim basis is assistant head coach and coach of the offensive line.
Before going any further, let me tell you that Vanderbilt has virtually no chance of winning the 2011 BCS Championship, SEC East or the SEC Championship. Vanderbilt was one of only two schools to not qualify for the post season after their disappointing 2-10 2009 season and doesn't look to be any better in 2010.
Prior to Johnson's Wednesday departure, Sportsbook.com listed the Commodores odds of winning the 2011 BCS Championship at +25000 (250/1). These odds are equivilant to a judge setting the bail of a mass murderer at 25-millon – it aint happenin'.
This doesn't mean that Vanderbilt is void of talent. Recently four Commodores were named preseason All-Southeastern Conference in Athlon Sports' 2010 Southeastern College Football Magazine. The top players returning are linebacker Chris Marve, running back/returner Warren Norman, cornerback Casey Hayward and safety Sean Richardson.
Marve, a junior co-captain from Memphis, and Norman, a sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., were named to Athlon's first team All-SEC squad at linebacker and kick returner, respectively. Hayward, from Perry, Ga., and Richardson, of Linden, Ala., were third team recipients.
Norman, an all SEC freshman last year, carried the torch for Vanderbilt. Following the season he was named SEC Freshman of the year. Norman finished the year with 783 yards rushing and an SEC freshman record of 1,941 all-purpose yards.
Things are not looking good for Vanderbilt football at the moment as they prepare for another season in the ultra-tough SEC. It will be a miracle if they can improve on last years two win mark.
