2009 College Football Odds: Penn State recorded their second double digit win season in the last four years by going 11-2 in 2008. The Nittany Lions, under the leadership of 82 year old Joe Paterno, also won the Big 10 conference with a 7-1 mark, leading to their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1995. Penn State is expected to be a juggernaut this year as well, with their BetUS.com season win total set at 9 and the over a -250 favorite in the bookmaker's Penn State Nittany Lions 2009 College Football Odds. Penn State was one of the most well-balanced teams in the nation last year as they featured a high-powered offense that could score in bunches as well as a dominant defensive unit that was capable of stonewalling most of its opposition. They return just nine starters from 2008's impressive squad, but should be a major force in college football once again.

Returning on offense are the two biggest pieces to last season's success, quarterback Daryll Clark and running back Evan Royster. Clark was highly effective running the Lions spread offense, producing 2592 yards through the air and 282 yards on the ground. He also accounted for 29 touchdowns, 19 via pass and 10 with his legs. Royster powered Penn State's attack, though, rushing for 1236 yards (6.5 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns.

Both Clark and Royster are potential Heisman candidates this season. BetUS.com has the senior quarterback at +1800 odds to win the coveted award, while the junior tailback is drawing +1200 odds.

On defense the Nittany Lions will have just four starters back from a group that held opponents to a mere 14.4 points per game. However, Penn State should still be a load for Big 10 offenses to deal with. The defensive line is deep and anchored by Jared Odrick, who led the team in sacks a season ago. Five of the top six linebackers also return, including leading tackler Navorro Bowman (106).

The biggest question mark on the defensive side of the ball will be the secondary as it will not return a single starter from last year's squad.

The Nittany Lions open their 2009 schedule with a September 5th battle at home against Akron. Their first conference game will be at State College on September 26th versus Iowa. The Hawkeyes were the only Big 10 squad to beat JoePa's troops last year, scoring a 23-24 win at Iowa City.
