2009 College Football Odds: The Purdue Boilermakers suffered through their worst season in over nine years last year as they finished with a 4-8 record and in ninth place in the Big 10. Longtime Head Coach Joe Tiller called it a career at the conclusion of 2008, after going 126-92-1 in his 12 years at the school. Former Tiller assistant Danny Hope will take over sideline duties this season. BetUS.com is not giving Hope much of a chance to turn things around this year as the team is listed at +8000 on the moneyline to win the conference in the bookmaker's Purdue Boilermakers 2009 College Football Odds.Purdue Boilermakers 2009 College Football Odds - BCS Odds 2010

Purdue will return five starters from an offense that averaged 24.7 points per game a season ago. Quarterback Curtis Painter, who put up some prolific numbers in his time at Purdue, will no longer be running the show. Painter did not distinguish himself in 2008, however, throwing for 2400 yards, 13 touches, and 11 interceptions.

Senior Joey Elliott will most likely take over for the departed Painter. Elliott has little experience and threw just 15 passes for 81 yards last season. The offensive line should be improved, though, and the team does have some solid skill position players in wide receiver Keith Smith (49 receptions/486 yards as a sophomore in '08) and running back Jaycen Taylor (career 5.6 yards per carry average).

Purdue's defense was a pedestrian unit in Tiller's last go round, holding team's to an average of 25.1 points and 358 yards per outing. Their biggest weakness was against the run as they gave up 175 yards per while allowing an average of 4.5 yards per carry against them.

Things should be improved this year as they return seven starters, including four of the top five tacklers from last year's squad. The line has good talent with defensive tackle Mike Neal, who had 5.5 sacks in 2008, returning and the secondary does as well in the senior cornerback tandem of David Pender and Brandon King.

Purdue has a tough non-conference slate in 2009 as they face Toledo, Oregon, Northern Illinois, and Notre Dame all in September. The Boilermakers open Big 10 action on October 3rd with a homecoming clash against Northwestern.
