West Virginia Mountaineers 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: West Virginia has been one of the nation's top college football programs for the better part of a decade, and it continued that trend last season, despite a bowl loss to Florida State. The Mountaineers finished 9-4 overall in Bill Stewart's second season as head coach, but many are projecting an even better tally this year. 2010 College Football Predictions at BetUS.com have West Virginia listed as a +250 moneyline co-favorite (Pittsburgh) to win the Big East Conference.
The Mountaineers offense has not been as productive since Rich Rodriguez left for Michigan, but it has still been effective.
Last season West Virginia averaged 26.2 points and 377 yards per game with Jarret Brown at quarterback. Despite Brown's contributions, Stewart should have a better unit in 2010 with seven starters back, including Noel Divine (RB), Jock Sanders (WR), Joe Madsen (C), Eric Jobe (RG), Josh Jenkins (LG), and Don Barclay (LT).
Divine, who is one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy, had another brilliant season as a junior, rushing for 1465 yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging 6.1 yards per carry. His return, coupled with Sanders, who had 72 receptions last season, will help highly recruited sophomore Geno Smith's transition from backup to starting quarterback.
The Mounatineers defense was one of the best in the Big East in 2009, giving up an average of 21.7 points and 337 yards per game. Nine starters and 15 lettermen are back, including seven of the top eight tacklers from a year ago. Defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel has just one underclassmen starter (SS Terence Garvin) and only three frontline players who are not seniors.
Leading the way for the promising unit are linebackers Pat Lazear, who led the team in tackles last season with 78, and J.T. Thomas (76 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, five passes defended, one interception) as well as defensive end Julian Miller (53 tackles, nine sacks).
