Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: Greg Schiano added to his coaching legend in New Brunswick last season as he guided the Scarlet Knights to a 9-4 record and fourth place standing in the Big East. The nine wins were the second most of Schiano's tenure, falling short only of 2006's 11-2 squad. 2010 College Football Predictions at Bodog.com are looking for another fourth place Big East finish this year as Rutgers is currently listed at 6 to 1 odds to win the conference championship, leaving it behind only Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Connecticut.
Rutgers offense produced its worst yards per game total since the 2003 season last year, posting an average of just 326;
however, the drop in yardage did not effect the team's scoring a great deal as the Knights averaged 28.8 per contest, a tally just one point shy of the 2006 team. Quaterback Tom Savage had a lot to do with that as he threw for 2211 yards and 14 touchdowns in earning freshman All America honors.
Savage and the offense should only get better this season, despite losing leading receiver Tim Brown. Two starters and several lettermen return to the offensive line and the team's top two rushers, Joe Martinek and Mohamed Sanu (combined for 1313 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in 2009), are also back. Sanu was also the team's second leading receiver last season after reeling in 51 receptions for 639 yards and three touchdowns.
Rutgers defense will have a difficult time matching 2009's numbers (17.9 points per game allowed, 308 yards per game allowed), which were some of the best in the nation, but six starters and 21 lettermen do return to campus. The top four tacklers are gone and a sophomore and redshirt freshman are starting in the secondary; however, senior linebacker Antonio Lowery (55 tackles, one sack, one interception) and senior defensive end Jonathan Freeny (33 tackles, 9.5 sacks) join five fellow upperclassmen in the starting unit.
The Scarlet Knights have a pretty easy go of it in the non-conference with North Carolina presenting by far the biggest challenge. But Schiano's troops face all of the top conference competition (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, West Virginia, South Florida), with the exception of Connecticut, on the road.
