Key Alabama player declared ineligible by NCAA

by Reno Gold on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Point-Spreads.com has learned that a key Alabama player, Crimson Tide defensive end Marcell Dareus has been declared ineligible by the NCAA because he recently attended a party at Miami's South Beach hosted by a sports agent. The Tuscaloosa News is now reporting that Dareus has been ruled ineligible and that Alabama will have to petition the NCAA to have him reinstated. News of Dareus' suspension has not affected futures betting odds posted by sports-books.

College football oddsmakers at SPORTSBETTING.com currently list the Crimson Tide as -110 odds favorites to win the Southeast Conference in 2010 and +400 favorites to win the 2011 BCS Championship.

The sports agent issue has been a problem for the SEC in recent weeks. The NCAA is looking into former Florida offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey who is alleged to have taken money from an agent prior to the Sugar Bowl. The NCAA has also looked at South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders who also has allegedly had an inappropriate contact with an agent.

With our without Marcell Dareus, Alabama will be a unanimous pick to win the SEC by media representatives and coaches currently being held at the SEC meetings in Hoover, Alabama.
