2009 College Football Odds: Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano guided his team to its fourth consecutive winning season last year as the Scarlet Knights concluded play with an 8-5 record. Things looked grim for the team after a 1-4 start, but a 7-1 finish assured another bowl appearance for Schiano and his troops. Rutgers finished fourth in the Big East last year after going 5-2 in conference play. They went on to an appearance in the Papajohns.com Bowl where they beat North Carolina State 29-23. Schiano welcomes back 13 starters from that unit as well as 47 lettermen. 

Unfortunately for Rutgers fans, quarterback Mike Teel will not be back under center (sixth round draft choice by the Seahawks). Teel was dreadful the first quarter of the season, throwing just two touchdown passes to seven interceptions, but the senior passer turned it on at the midway point. He finished the year with 3418 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 13 picks.

Replacing Teel is senior Domenic Natale. Natale threw just eight passes last year for a total of 36 yards.

The Scarlet Knights also lose leading receiver Kenny Britt (first round - Titans), but return four starters from a good offensive line as well as their top three rushers. It is safe to assume that Schiano will pound the ball on the ground this season.

The Rutgers defense brings back six starters from a unit that held teams to a meager 18.8 points per game. The team's leading tackler, linebacker Kevin Malast (101), is gone but five of the top six backers are still on the roster. The team will also have those accountable for 19 of the defense's 29 sacks back in New Brunswick.

The Scarlet Knights open the year with a conference tilt against defending Big East champion Cincinnati on September 7th at Rutgers Stadium.
