2009 College Football Odds: Head Coach Dan Hawkins enters his fourth year at Colorado with, perhaps, his best squad yet. The Buffs were just 5-7 last year but they return 13 starters and 54 lettermen, giving them a far more experienced unit heading into the 2009 season. Despite what should be a far more competitive bunch, online bookmaker BetUS.com still has Colorado listed as a +2000 long shot to win the Big 12 in their Colorado Buffaloes 2009 College Football Odds.Colorado Buffaloes 2009 College Football Odds - BCS Odds 2010

Dan Hawkins' offense did not do many things right last year, producing just 20.2 points and 319 yards per game. Hawkins' son, Cody, served as quarterback and threw for 1892 yards and 17 touchdowns, but was sacked 30 times. The running game was suppose to be better with star recruit Darrell Scott in the backfield, but the true freshman had just 343 yards and one touchdown while the team averaged a paltry 3.4 yards per carry.

Scott, who dealt with injuires last season, should be a dynamic player for Colorado this year. Hawkins, who is just a junior, has, no doubt, benefited from his experiences over his first two seasons in Boulder. He should be a more capable passer in his dad's system and he should have a little better protection as the offensive line returns nine of the top ten players from a season ago.

Hawkins will also have the top two receivers from last year back in Scotty McKnight and Josh Smith.

The Buffaloes defense returns just four starters from a unit that gave up 29.3 points and 382 yards per contest. Linebackers Jeff Smith and Shaun Mohler, who led the team in tackles last year, are back on campus and will anchor what should be the strength of the defense.

The defensive line and secondary lose a number of key contributors, including defensive tackle George Hypolite (45 tackles, four sacks) and free safety Ryan Walter (87 tackles, two interceptions).

Colorado opens the season with their annual skirmish against Colorado State on September 5th. Their first Big 12 game is scheduled for October 10th at Texas.
