Army Black Knights 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: It has been a rough stretch for Army football as the team has not won more than five games since the 1996 season. However, despite the drought, things took a turn for the better last year under the direction of new Head Coach Rich Ellerson. Ellerson fashioned the Black Knights into a competitive bunch, almost getting them to a bowl eligible sixth victory (5-7). 2010 College Football Predictions at BetUS.com show just how far Army has to go, though, as the team is currently listed at +75000 moneyline odds to win the BCS National Championship.
Rich Ellerson installed a triple option offense at Army last season, in the mold of Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson, but the
attack did not pay big dividends. That should change this year with eight starters and 20 lettermen back on offense, including quarterback Trent Steelman. Just a sophomore, Steelman threw for 637 yards and three touchdowns while also leading the team in rushing with a total of 706 yards and five scores in 2009.
The entire starting offensive line, with the exception of left guard Fritz Bentler, returns as do running backs Patrick Mealy, Kingsley Ehie, and Jameson Carter. That trio combined for 1384 rush yards and seven touchdowns a season ago.
With a year of experience in Ellerson's system, the offense should definitely improve upon 2009's dismal 15.3 point per game average.
The Black Knights defense played well under new defensive coordinators Payam Saadat and Chris Smeland, limiting its opposition to an average of 21.9 points and 305 yards per game. Eight starters are back this season as well as 25 lettermen, giving Army the best defensive unit it has had in over a decade. The top six tacklers return as do leading sacker Josh McNary (12.5) and top cover man Donovan Travis (71 tackles, four interceptions).
The schedule is not an easy one for the Black Knights as they face a number of quality teams, including Temple, Rutgers, Air Force, Notre Dame, and Navy. While Army is capable of springing an upset in any one of those games, it will be a dog heading into all of them. There are also potential land mines against North Texas, which should be much improved this season, Duke, a team the Black Knights lost 19-35 to a year ago, and Kent State. Army will probably be favored against Eastern Michigan, Hawaii, Tulane, and VMI; it will need to win all of those games in order to approach last year's five win season.
2010 College Football Predictions: 5-7 Overall.
