2009 College Football Odds: The Jayhawks enter the 2009 college football season as one of the favorites to win the Big 12 North. Kansas went 8-5 last year and finished third in the division after going 4-4 in Big 12 play. Head Coach Mark Mangino also guided his team to its third bowl victory in the last four years. BetUS.com, despite the Jayhawks high scoring offense, has Kansas regular season win total set at 8 with the under a -165 favorite in their Kansas Jayhawks 2009 College Football Odds. Kansas should field one of the top offenses in the country this season as they return seven starters from a unit that produced 33.4 points and 432 yards per game. Back with the team are quarterback Todd Reesing, wide receivers Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier, and running back Jake Sharp. Reesing, who has proved to be one of the scrappiest performers in the nation, threw for 3888 yards and 32 touchdowns in 2008 (13 interceptions). Briscoe and Meier were the best receiving tandem in the country a season ago, combining for 189 receptions, 2452 yards, and 23 touchdowns (yes, you read that right). Sharp was a solid compliment, rushing for 860 yards and 12 touchdowns (4.6 yards per carry). The only drawback for the offense is the fact that only two starters return along the offensive line. The Jayhawks defense, unlike previous seasons under Mangino, was not as solid last year. They gave up an average of 28.8 points per game on the season and had an especially difficult time shutting down some of the potent offenses in the Big 12. Conference foes scored 36.6 against them while racking up an average of 36.7 more yards per game. Seven return from the '08 group, including top performers Jake Laptab (DE - seven sacks, 38 tackles) and Darrell Stuckey (SS - 98 tackles, five interceptions). However, leading tackler/sacker James Holt (105 tackles, 10 sacks) is gone along with linebackers Mike Rivera and Joe Mortensen. The defensive line and secondary should be improved, but the lack of experience at linebacker could be a problem for Mangino. Kansas opens the year with a home game against Northern Colorado on September 5th. They have a fairly tough slate of non-conference games after that as they face UTEP, Duke, and Southern Miss. The Jayhawks first conference action is scheduled for October 10th when they take on Iowa State in Lawrence.
