2009 College Football Odds: The Missouri Tigers finished with double digit wins for the second season in a row last year, and captured the Big 12 North crown for the second time in the process. Head Coach Gary Pinkel watched his team go 5-3 in conference play (10-4 overall) and win a bowl for the third time in the last four seasons. Unfortunately for Tiger fans, only nine starters return for last year's squad and odds makers have taken notice. Sportsbetting.com has Missouri's win total set at 7.5 and the under is a -210 favorite in the bookmaker's Missouri Tigers 2009 College Football Odds. Missouri had one of the best offenses in the nation last year as they averaged 42.2 points and 484 yards per game. They hurt opponents equally with both the run (154 yards, 5.2 yards per carry) and pass (330 yards per game), and their special teams was adept at putting points on the board as well. However, they experienced some serious turnover this off-season and most of the major cogs have moved on. Quarterback Chase Daniel, a three year starter who threw for 4335 yards and 39 touchdowns in 2008, will be replaced by sophomore Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert has thrown 13 passes in his college career for a grand total of 43 yards. In addition to the loss of Daniel, the Tigers will also be without wide receiver and special teams threat Jeremy Maclin (102 receptions, 1260 yards, 13 touchdowns) as well as tight end Chase Coffman. Coffman caught 90 passes for 987 yards and 10 touchdowns in a spectacular senior campaign. Both players were selected in the 2009 NFL Draft. On the bright side, Missouri does return three starting offensive linemen for last year's unit, along with running back Derrick Washington. Washington had a banner sophomore season, rushing for 1036 yards and 17 touchdowns. Coach Pinkel also had to replace long time offensive coordinator Dave Christensen. Christensen accepted the head coaching job at Wyoming at the conclusion of the season. He will be replaced by former quarterbacks coach David Yost. Defensively the Tigers were an average group a season ago. They held teams to 27.2 points per game, but allowed 412 yards per outing, 287 of which came through the air. Despite the pedestrian numbers, Missouri loses some major talent from the unit. Defensive tackle Evander "Ziggy" Hood (65 tackles, five sacks), a first round selection of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is gone, as is leading sacker Stryker Sulak (55 tackles, 10.5 sacks). Pinkel also had replace staff here too, with coordinator Matt Eberflus moving on to be an assistant with the Cleveland Browns. Eberflus' old job will go to former linebackers coach Dave Steckel. Again, there is a silver lining to a seemingly dark cloud. Missouri will have its best defender, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, back on campus. Weatherspoon led the nation in tackles last year with 155. He also had five sacks, seven passes defended, and three interceptions. The Tigers open the 2009 schedule with a tough non-conference tilt against Illinois in St. Louis. Their first Big 12 action is slated for October 8th when they take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Columbia.
