Stanford Cardinal 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: Stanford enjoyed its first winning season last year since going 9-3 in 2001. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, who is entering his fourth year at the school, guided the team to an 8-5 record (second place finish in the Pac 10) and a near upset of Oklahoma in the Sun Bowl. 2010 College Football Predictions at BetUS.com are predicting a step back for the Cardinal this season as the team's win total is presently listed at 7.5 with the Under favored at -140 moneyline odds.
Stanford's win total has increased every season under Jim Harbaugh's watch, which has some wondering if the 2010
Cardinal have what it takes to win the school's first Pac 10 title since 1999. This year's squad does welcome back 15 starters and 43 lettermen from the 2009 unit, giving Stanford its best chance to garner the conference championship in nearly a decade.
The Cardinal offense averaged 428 yards per game a season ago, 218 of which came via the run. Stanford leaned heavily on Heisman runner-up Toby Gerhart, who rushed for 1871 yards and 28 touchdowns in a brilliant senior campaign. With Gerhart gone, Harbaugh will put more responsibility on the shoulders of sophomore quarterback Andrew Luck. Luck, who is projected as a first round draft pick, proved last year that he can handle the pressure by throwing for 2573 yards and 13 touchdowns (four picks) while ranking second on the team in rushing with total of 354 yards (5.8 yards per carry).
In addition to Luck, the team also has four starters from last year's stellar offensive line back as well as its top two wideouts in Ryan Whalen and Chris Owusu (combined for 94 receptions, 1608 yards, and nine touchdowns in 2009).
Stanford's defense, which was the team's Achilles heel in Pac 10 play last year (26.1 points and 403 yards per game allowed), will be under the direction of a new coordinator in Vic Fangio. Fangio, who served as the linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens in 2009, will be working with seven starters and 20 lettermen from last season's pedestrian group. Among those returning are highly touted linebackers Thomas Keiser (nine sacks) and Shayne Skov (62 tackles as a true freshman last year) and cornerback Richard Sherman (62 tackles, eight passes defended).
With the returning talent and Fangio's influence, the Cardinal defense will do a better job of supporting the offense than it did a season ago.
