California Golden Bears 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: California had big expectations going into the 2009 season, but injuries and under achievement led to an 8-5 record and sixth place finish in the Pac 10 standings. Now the Bears are being overlooked with the departure of stars Jahvid Best and Tyson Alualu as 2010 College Football Predictions at BetUS.com have the team listed at +800 moneyline odds to win the conference championship.
California has always performed better as an under the radar team in Jeff Tedford's eight year tenure at the school, which
means it may sneak up on a few teams this fall. Granted, the Pac 10 will probably be the most competitive conference in the country this season, but with 14 starters and 55 lettermen returning to Berkeley, the Golden Bears will have an opportunity to stand out.
The offense, which averaged 29.1 points and 392 yards per game last season, welcomes back four starters up front as well as senior quarterback Kevin Riley and junior running back Shane Vereen. Riley threw for 2850 yards and 18 touchdowns last year while Vereen led the team in rushing with a total of 952 yards and 12 touchdowns (5.2 yards per carry). Also returning are four of last season's top five receivers, including wide out Marvin Jones (43 receptions, 651 yards, six touchdowns).
The Golden Bears defense took a major step back last season, despite returning seven starters from 2008's stellar unit. Cal allowed an average of 25.5 points and 379 yards per game in 2009, an total of 5.6 points and 64 yards more per contest than its predecessor yielded. Despite the loss of NFL talent in Alualu and cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson, this year's group should perform better. Linebacker Mike Mohamed, a first team all conference performer who led the team in tackles last season with 112, returns as does defensive end Cameron Jordan (48 tackles, six sacks). Mohamed and Jordan are two of eight upperclassmen starters under the direction of new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast.
California has a couple of potential stumbling blocks in its non-conference schedule in Colorado and Nevada, but should manage to hit Pac 10 play with an unblemished record. The Golden Bears will face tough road tests at Arizona, USC, and Oregon State, but host Oregon, Stanford, and Washington, giving them a chance to win the conference.
