Oklahoma Sooners 2009 College Football Odds – BCS Odds 2010

by Matt Foust on Monday, August 3rd, 2009

2009 College Football Odds: Oklahoma had another amazing season last year under the guidance of Head Coach Bob Stoops, scoring double digit wins for the eighth time in the last nine years. Unfortunately for Sooner fans, the team's 12-1 Big 12 winning season ended in another bowl loss as OU fell 14-24 to Florida in the BCS National Championship. Odds makers at Sportsbetting.com are favoring Oklahoma to finish under 10 wins this year at -145 in their 2009 College Football Odds – BCS Odds 2010.Oklahoma Sooners 2009 College Football Odds - BCS Odds 2010

Many people felt Oklahoma was the recipient of some good fortune last year, winning the Big 12 South despite losing to Texas head-to-head. However, the Sooners took advantage of the opportunity presented and pounded Missouri 62-21 in the conference title game to earn a shot at the national championship.

Fourteen starters return from that highly talented squad, including Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Sam Bradford. Bradford threw for 4720 yards and 50 touchdowns (eight interceptions) while completing 67.9 percent of his passes. The senior passer will have largely the same set of skill position players around him this year, with the exception of wide receivers Juaquin Iglesias and Manuel Johnson.

The top two rushers are back in Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray as well as tight end Jermaine Gresham. Brown and Murray combined for 2222 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns a season ago, leading the unit to a 199 yards per game average on the ground. Gresham hauled in 66 catches for 950 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The downside for the OU offense, and Bradford, is that only one starter returns from an offensive line that allowed just 13 sacks.

The Sooner defense was somewhat down last year, at least compared to past Oklahoma units. Still, the squad allowed just 24.5 points and 368 yards per game while producing 42 sacks. This year's defense should be one of the best in the country as nine starters return.

The entire front seven is back in Norman, which includes 2007 first team all Big 12 defensive end Auston English, second team All American defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and Big 12 defensive freshman Player of the Year, linebacker Travis Lewis. English has accounted for 14 sacks over the last two seasons, despite battling injuries, and Lewis had 144 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and four interceptions last year as a freshman. McCoy had 30 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and one interception in a brilliant junior campaign.

Oklahoma opens the season with a tough non-conference tilt against BYU on September 5th in Arlington, Texas. Their first Big 12 action will take place on October 10th when they host the Baylor Bears at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
