Washington State Cougars 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: Head Coach Paul Wulff did not inherit much to work with when he took over at Washington State in 2008 and the Cougars record over the past seasons has reflected that fact. The program hit rock bottom last year, though, finishing up with a 1-11 tally. 2010 College Football Predictions at BetUS.com have the Cougars pegged for dead last in the Pac 10 again this season as the team is presently listed at +3000 odds to win the conference championship.
While Paul Wulff's first two years in Pullman could be classified as a disaster, the Cougars might have an opportunity to wi
n more than one or two games this season. Fifteen starters and 50 lettermen are back on campus, giving the team more depth and experience than it has had since 2007.
Washington State's offense, which averaged an abysmal 12 points per game last season, returns almost the entire offensive line, with the exception of all conference performer Kenny Alfred (center). The skill positions are also sound, relatively speaking, with starting quarterback Jeff Tuel and top receivers Jared Karstetter and Gino Simone back. Tuel led the team in passing last year as a true freshman with 789 yards and six touchdowns while Karstetter hauled in a team best 38 catches for 540 yards and six scores.
Senior James Montgomery (167 yards, one touchdown) will take over as the starting running back, a little used weapon in Wulff's spread offense, replacing Dwight Tardy, who led a year ago with 417 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cougars defense gave up a staggering 512 yards per game last season, but surprisingly lowered its points per game allowed average from 43.8 to 38.5. Seven starters are back, including top tackler Alex Hoffman-Ellis (LB) and senior safety Chima Nwachukwu, who finished fourth on the team with 57 tackles a season ago. The front seven should be far superior than the 2009 version as the defensive line brings back all but one and it retains its top producer in defensive end Travis Long (47 tackles, two sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss).
Washington State faces a down Oklahoma State squad in week one but the game is in Stillwater, giving the upper hand to the Pokes. From there the Cougars take on Montana State and SMU in non-conference play, which should translate into at least one victory. Wulff and company will host USC, Oregon, Arizona, California, and Washington in Pac 10 action while traveling to take on conference rivals Stanford, Arizona State, and Oregon State. Finding one win in there could prove difficult.
