2009 College Football Odds: Texas Tech had the best season, or certainly the most prolific, in its history last year, reaching 11 wins for just the third time in almost a century. Head Coach Mike Leach guided his team to a second place finish in the Big 12 South with a 7-1 conference record. The Red Raiders only regular season defeat was against the Sooners in Norman, Oklahoma. Significant losses, specifically on the offensive side of the ball, have odds makers at Sportsbetting.com looking for a step back from Tech this year as the under 8 wins is a -180 favorite in the bookmaker's Texas Tech Red Raiders 2009 College Football Odds - BCS Odds 2010.Texas Tech Red Raiders 2009 College Football Odds - BCS Odds 2010

Texas Tech has become known for its quick-strike, high scoring offense under Leach (entering his 10th year with the program). Last season, though, the mad scientist coach had some special talent with which to work in quarterback Graham Harrell and receiver Michael Crabtree. Harrell had 5111 passing yards to go along with 45 touchdown tosses while Crabtree was on the receiving end of 1165 (97 receptions) of those yards and 19 of the touchdowns.

Both players are gone, as are seven other offensive starters. Junior Taylor Potts, who threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns in 36 attempts last year, takes over for Harrell at quarterback. Leading rusher Baron Batch also returns, along with two starters from the offensive line.

The offense will, most certainly, have some drop off, but it will still put plenty of points on the scoreboard as it always has with Leach running the show.

The Red Raiders defense was solid a season ago, holding its opposition to 27.8 points and 383 yards per contest. Seven return from last year's squad, including four of the top five tacklers.

Linebacker Brian Duncan, who lead the team with 94 tackles in 2008, headlines the front seven along with defensive end McKinner Dixon. Dixon had 33 tackles and nine sacks last year; his outstanding play earned him Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the year. The defensive line, despite the loss of Brandon Williams (13 sacks), and linebacking core will be the strength of the unit again this season as five starters and most of the backups return.

Texas Tech opens the season on September 5th with a home game against North Dakota. They delve into conference play rather quickly, taking on the Longhorns in Austin, Texas on September 19th.
