2009 College Football Odds: Notre Dame recovered from a dreadful 3-9 2007 campaign to go 7-6 last year. The Irish capped off the season by pounding Hawaii 49-21 in the Hawaii Bowl, giving Head Coach Charlie Weis his first post-season win since arriving in South Bend. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2009 College Football Odds at BetUS.com would indicate continued improvement from the storied program this season as the team's win total is set at 9. This year Charlie Weis may have his most talented squad since the 2005 team that went 9-3 and lost to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. Nine starters return on the offensive side of the ball while six are back for the defense. Forty-four lettermen are also back on campus, which gives the team quality depth at almost every position. Quarterback Jimmy Clausen has taken his share of lumps over the past two seasons, but he displayed some real potential on numerous occasions in 2008. The junior field general finished the year with 3172 yards passing and 25 touchdowns (17 interceptions). If he improves as much this year as he did between his freshman and sophomore seasons, than Irish fans should be more than pleased with Clausen's play in 2009. Along with Clausen, the offense, which averaged 24.7 points per game last year, welcomes back the top six rushers, the top four receivers, and eight of the top 10 offensive linemen. The Notre Dame defense held opponents to 22.2 points per game in Weis' fourth year on the sidelines. That number, which is more than respectable, is likely to drop this year with the type of players returning. The defensive line and linebacking corps did lose a handful of starters, but several highly touted recruits, as well as red shirt freshman moving into key starting and reserve roles, should soften that blow. The secondary was solid last season (the Irish allowed an average of just 196 passing yards per game) and figures to be the strength of the defense this year as six of the top eight players from a season ago revisit the team. Strong saftey Kyle CcCarthy, who led Notre Dame with 110 tackles in 2008, will anchor the unit. The Fighting Irish open the year against Nevada on September 5th in South Bend, Indiana.
