UNLV Rebels 2010 College Football Predictions – BCS Odds 2011: UNLV has not had a winning record since going 8-5 in 2000, leaving the school no choice but to show Mike Sanford, who has presided over the football program the last five years, the door. Bobby Hauck steps in as head coach after directing FCS school Montana to three championship game appearances. 2010 College Football Predicitons at Sportsbook.com are not looking for a major turnaround this season, though, as the Rebels are presently listed at -150 moneyline odds to finish Under four wins.
The situation in Las Vegas is not totally forlorn for Coach Hauck as he retains 15 starters and 48 lettermen from last
season's 5-7 squad. The talent level should allow the Rebels to be competitive in Mountain West play, but the team remains a step behind clubs like Air Force and several steps back of BYU, Utah, and TCU.
UNLV's offense averaged 24.8 points and 351 yards per game a season ago, numbers that are characteristic of a 5-7 team. With eight starters back the Rebels offense is destined to improve, even though the players are assimilating a new system. Quarterback Omar Clayton, who threw for 2230 yards and 13 touchdowns, is back under center and will be joined by backfield mates Channing Trotter and Mike Clausen. Trotter and Clausen, who combined for 829 rush yards and 16 touchdowns last year, will be operating behind a line that returns four starters, three of which are seniors.
The receiving corps is also sound, even with the loss of leader Ryan Wolfe, as Phillip Payne and Michael Johnson produced 101 receptions, 1145 yards, and eight touchdowns a season ago.
The Rebels' defense was the biggest reason the school failed to reach the .500 mark last year, giving up 33.4 points and 448 yards per game in conference action. The opportunity is there for the unit to show vast improvement as seven starters and 25 lettermen are back on campus this season. Leading tackler Jason Beauchamp is gone, but the defense will feature eight frontline seniors, including cornerback Quinton Pointer (72 tackles, four passes defended) and linebacker Starr Fuimaono (67 tackles).
