2009 College Football Odds: Dabo Swinney can now officially claim the Clemson Tigers as his team. Swinney earned the head coaching job after guiding the squad to four wins in their final five 2008 regular season games while filling in for the fired Tommy Bowden. Despite the strong conclusion, the Tigers 3-3 start doomed them to a fifth place finish in the ACC's Atlantic division. Clemson finished the year with a 7-6 mark after losing 21-26 to Nebraska in the Gator Bowl. Clemson Tigers 2009 College Football Odds at Sportsbetting.com have the team's win total set at 8.5 this year with the under being favored at -135 on the moneyline.
Swinney has a great deal of talent returning this year as seven offensive and eight defensive starters are back with the team. There is also a good deal of depth back in Clemson with 53 lettermen returning. However, last season's starting quarterback, leading rusher, and top receiver have all moved on.
Filling in for Cullen Harper at quarterback will be sophomore Willy Korn. Korn threw for 216 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in limited action last year. Running back James Davis will be replaced by C.J. Spiller. Spiller, despite not leading the team in rushing, was a huge part of the offense in 2008 as he ran for 629 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns. He also was the team's third leading receiver with 34 catches for 436 yards and three touchdowns. The senior tailback is presently listed at 20 to 1 odds to win the 2009 Heisman Trophy.
Clemson's offensive line was young and inexperienced last season, which led to an average of just 112 yards rushing per game. What was a weakness last year should be a strength this season as most of the starters return and a number of younger players gained valuable experience in the trenches.
The Clemson defense was one of the best in the conference in 2008, holding teams to a meager 17.3 points per game. Two of the top three tacklers from that unit are gone (free safety Chris Clemons and strong safety Michael Hamlin); however, new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will, most likely, be working with the best defense in the ACC.
The defensive line and linebacking corps are loaded with good, experienced players, including Da'Quan Bowers (DE) and Kavell Conner (OLB). Bowers had 47 tackles and seven tackles for loss as a true freshmen last season while Conner led the team with 125 tackles.
The secondary, as mentioned, loses the two starting safeties, but the top corners are back. Additionally, DeAndre McDaniel and Sadat Chambers, who will be taking the spots of Clemons and Hamlin, combined for 98 tackles in 2008.
Clemson opens the season with a home game against Middle Tennessee on September 5th. The Tigers hit conference play early, playing at Georgia Tech the next weekend.
