2009 College Football Odds: Wake Forest recorded their third straight winning season in 2008, going 8-5 and finishing in fourth place in the ACC's Atlantic division with a 4-4 conference record. The Demon Deacons also earned their third consecutive bowl appearance as they beat Navy 29-19 in the EagleBank Bowl. With just four defensive starters returning, online bookmaker Sportsbetting.com has set the team's win total at 7.5 (under -220 favorite) in their Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2009 College Football Odds.
The Wake Forest offense was anything but the strength of the team last season, averaging just 21 points and 308 yards per game. However, it will be this year as nine starters return to that side of the ball.
Senior Riley Skinner is back under center to direct Jim Grobe's offense and he should be primed for his best season ever in Winston-Salem. Skinner threw for 2347 yards, 13 touchdowns, and seven interceptions last year behind a line that gave up 30 sacks. His main target, wide receiver D.J. Boldin, is gone but with the improvements up front (nine of the top 10 offensive linemen from a season ago are back) and an enhanced running game, Skinner should post some quality numbers.
The Demon Deacons defense was excellent for Grobe last season, having two of the better players in the country on which to rely. Aaron Curry won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker (105 tackles, 13.5 tackle for loss) and cornerback Alphonso Smith earned first team All American honors after recording 37 tackles, 13 passes defended, and seven interceptions.
Five other starters, along with Curry and Smith, have moved on. This will be a year of transition for the defense, but the unit should still be respectable. The defensive line has good experience and will be anchored by NFL prospects Boo Robinson and John Russell. The two senior tackles combined for 85 tackles and nine sacks in 2008.
The Demon Deacons open the 2009 season with a home game against the Big 12's Baylor Bears. Wake's ACC schedule kicks off on September 26th with an away contest at Boston College.
