Colorado State's offense returned seven starters a season ago, but saw its numbers drop from 25.2 points and 396 yards 
in 2008 to 21.7 and 351 last year. Only four offensive starters from the 2009 squad are back in Fort Collins this season as the starting quarterback, top two receivers, and four starting lineman have all moved on.
It looks as though true freshman Pete Thomas will assume field general duties after a celebrated prep career at Valhalla in California. The 6' 5" Thomas threw for 2392 yards and 24 touchdowns (64 percent completion percentage, six interceptions) as a high school senior.
The strength of the unit will rest in a backfield that returns last season's top producers Leonard Mason and John Mosure and welcomes UCLA transfer Raymond Carter. Mason and Leonard combined for 1416 yards and nine touchdowns in 2009.
The Rams defense improved upon its 2008 totals by allowing 0.4 fewer points and 22 fewer yards per game last season. Defensive coordinator Larry Kerr can anticipate a big drop this year with eight starters back, including leading tacklers Mychal Sisson (91 tackles, six sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss) and Elijah Blu-Smith (74 tackle, five passes defended, three interceptions).
It is safe to say that Colorado State's defense will keep it competitive this season, but the offense might have difficulty helping the team generate wins.
