2009 College Football Odds: The Virginia Cavaliers enter the new college football season after going 5-7 in 2008. Despite the losing record, many were surprised the Cavs were able to reach five wins after losing most of the starters from their 9-4 2007 squad. They have another challenge ahead of them this year as only 11 starters are back from a team that was 3-5 in conference action last season. The lack of returning experience has made for some long odds at SBGglobal.com. The bookmaker has Virginia listed at +2000 on the moneyline to win the ACC Championship in their Virginia Cavaliers 2009 College Football Odds. The Cavaliers offense was the weak link on last year's club as it averaged 16.1 points and 300 yards per game. A rash of injuries, departures, and academic issues thrust Marc Verica into the starting quarterback role and he did not perform well. Verica closed out the season with 2037 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. This year Virginia gets 2007 starter Jameel Sewell back and he should be more efficient under center than Verica. As a sophomore Sewell tossed 12 touchdowns to eight interceptions and he has a career 17 to 15 ratio. Virginia does have four starters back on the offensive line, which should help keep Sewell upright and possibly improve a rushing attack that averaged just 97 yards per game. The skill positions are weak, though, as lead rusher Cedric Peerman is gone as well as the top five receivers from 2008. Head Coach Al Groh had another solid defensive unit in 2008 and with six starters returning to Charlottesville this year, it should again be respectable. Groh does lose his lead sacker in defensive end Alex Field as well as his top tackler in linebacker Jon Cooper, but there is still good talent in the front seven. Defensive end Matt Conrath had 35 tackles and three sacks as a red shirt freshman in 2008 and figures to fill Fields role in the Cavs 3-4 defensive scheme. The Virginia secondary could be one of the better defensive backfields in the ACC as they have two top shelf cornerbacks back on the team. Vic Hall and Ras-l Dowling combined for 102 tackles, five interceptions, and 11 passes defended in 2008. The Cavaliers open the season on September 5th against William & Mary; they meet the Tar Heels of North Carolina on October 3rd to open ACC play.
