2009 College Football Odds: Hokies Head Coach Frank Beamer guided his team to its fifth consecutive double digit win season last year. Virginia Tech finished the 2008 season with a 10-4 record after beating Boston College 30-12 in the ACC Championship Game and overcoming Cincinnati 20-7 in the Orange Bowl. Blacksburg is, understandably, abuzz for the upcoming 2009 campaign as Beamer brings back 16 starters from last year's ACC Championship squad. Virginia Tech Hokies 2009 College Football Odds at BetUS.com have the Hokies listed at +150 on the moneyline to win the ACC Coastal Division. The Tech offense was a far cry from great last year, cranking out a pedestrian 22.1 points and 303 yards per game. The starting quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, threw just two touchdown passes to seven interceptions and the offensive line gave up a whopping 42 sacks. The lone bright spot offensively was the ground game as running back Darren Evans (1265 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Taylor (738 yards, seven touchdowns) helped the team rush for an average of 174 yards per game. Taylor is back for his junior season and while his passing efficiency should improve, Beamer's offense will make the most of his running abilities. Taylor's legs will be especially important as Evans went down this summer with a torn ACL and will miss the entire 2009 season. Evans will, most likely, be replaced by true freshman David Wilson (one of the top running back recruits in the nation) or senior Kenny Lewis (237 yards, three touchdowns last season). The offensive line stands to be a much better group this season with eight of last year's top 10 back on campus. The receiving corps should post better numbers than a season ago as well as the top six wideouts, which includes Jarrett Boykin and Danny Coale, return. To no one's surprise, Beamer had one of the best defensive units in the nation last year. Virginia Tech allowed just 279 yards and 16.7 points per game in 2008, marking the fifth consecutive season that the group has held those averages under 300 yards and 20 points. With seven starters back, there is a high probability that the team will keep that streak alive. The defensive line, while it does lose defensive end Orion Martin (7.5 sacks), is particularly strong with tackles Cordarrow Thompson and John Graves anchoring the middle and Jason Worilds attacking from the end. Worilds led the team in sacks last year with eight and he also added 10 tackles for loss. The secondary is also stacked with three senior starters and experienced depth at almost every position. Free safety Kam Chancellor and cornerback Stephan Virgil are the two standouts in the group as they combined for 95 tackles and eight interceptions last season. The Hokies have a tough non-conference schedule this season, facing Alabama, Nebraska and East Carolina along with Marshall. They open the year on September 5th against the Crimson Tide and move into conference play on September 26th with a tilt against Miami in Blacksburg.
