2009 College Football Odds: The Sun Devils disappointed in Dennis Erickson's second year with the program, going 5-7 overall and 4-5 in Pac-10 play. ASU's sub-par record relegated them to sixth place in the conference standings and left them home during the bowl season. Expectations are lower this year as 13 starters return from 2008's underachieving squad. The Sun Devils offense under performed last season, even with Rudy Carpenter under center. The senior passer had a decent year, throwing for 2493 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, but the team averaged an ordinary 22.8 points per game. The ground game helped kill the effectiveness of Carpenter by averaging just 89 yards per contest and a miserable 2.9 yards per carry.

Seven starters are back on the offensive side of the ball, which should led to some improvement, but Carpenter is not among those returning. Sophomore Samson Szakacsy, who will take his place, has yet to throw a pass at the collegiate level. 

The offensive line, which was a liability in 2008, may be the strength of the unit this year. Nine of the top 10 linemen return and it only figures that their experience will lead to a better ground attack. The number of sacks allowed (34) ought to go down as well.

Arizona State, as it did a season ago, will rely on its defense a great deal in 2009. The unit limited opponents to 22.7 points per game last year, which ranked fourth in the Pac-10 behind USC, California, and Arizona.

The defensive front seven will place the Sun Devils in that top tier this year as well, with players like Mike Nixon, Travis Goethel, Dexter Davis, and Lawrence Guy back in Tempe. Nixon led the team in tackles last year with 90 and he also had five interceptions at weak side linebacker. Davis is one of the top pass rushers in the nation, recording 27.5 sacks in his three seasons as a Sun Devil.

ASU kicks off their 2009 season against Idaho State on September 5th in Tempe. Erickson's troops will not face a Pac-10 school until October 3rd when the meet Oregon State at Sun Devil Stadium.
